We provide domiciliary eye test services at all Barnoldswick’s care homes including Cravenside, Briercliffe Lodge, Abbeyfield & St Andrews House.

Even if a care home has a large national company coming in to do all the eye tests, you are still entitled to have your eyes tested by whomever you wish and can request a visit from your local independent optician.

If you are over 60 – or within certain NHS entitlement groups – and are ‘unable to attend the practice unaccompanied’, the full cost of the eye test is funded by the health service.

We provide a full and thorough one hour eye examination with our portable diagnostic equipment and carry a wide selection of frames covering all styles and budgets.

Just as in the practice we carry out an assessment of the external and internal eye, a range of objective and subjective tests to determine your prescription and perform measurements of eye pressure and visual fields where appropriate.

Benefits for a care home resident

Written report provided to the care home detailing the current status of your vision and eye health and, if necessary, the type of glasses needed.

Photographs of the glasses are provided as part of the care home report as well as on an additional information report to be kept in their room to assist the carers.

Name engraving on the side arm as well as the type of glasses (e.g. distance or reading). This can be provided by a local Barnoldswick engraver at a cost of £5.
Local presence for minor adjustments and repairs.

Feel a test is not needed due to an inability to do the test?

We make our eye examination service available to every one of our patients, either at home or in the practice. There are some patients who, for example, due to dementia, stroke etc. are unable to participate in subjective testing so we rely more on our objective tests for assessing their prescription. We see many patients in the local care homes where this is the case.

Checking your optical prescription and your eye health regularly is especially important as we get older and should be checked annually if you are over 70, as having good vision is important for everyone. This is why the NHS funds this valuable service.

Feel a test is not needed due to established poor vision?

We are the only local practice accredited to provide the East Lancashire low vision aid enhanced service and this can be performed in your own home as well. So we can provide a wide range of magnifiers free of charge on a long term loan basis.

Arrange an optician care home visit

James provides the care home visit service every Tuesday. However please let us know if this is not convenient and we will try our best to accommodate your needs.

We aim to have your glasses ready and delivered within two weeks of the test date and often this is sooner.

We welcome the presence of a carer or relative to be present. Having any previous sight test details and a current medication list is also helpful.
